Neurotoxins
Neurotoxins like Botox® and Dysport® are used to balance facial asymmetry, relax tight neck bands, and to reduce excessive or unwanted perspiration.
What are Neurotoxins?
Also known as Botox Cosmetic®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Daxxify®, Jeuveau® or Botulinum Toxin Type A. Botulinum toxin (Type A) is a cosmetic injection that blocks the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. This effect relaxes and smooths the look of lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive movements on the face – most commonly, between the brows, crows-feet around the eyes, and horizontal forehead creases.
Botulinum toxin is also used cosmetically to balance facial asymmetry and relax tight neck bands, as well as medically to reduce perspiration.

Where can neurotoxins be used?
What are neurotoxins used for?
- Deep lines between your eyes make you look tired, angry, sad, or upset.
- Your facial expressions cause wrinkles around your eyes and on forehead.
- There is asymmetry in your eyebrows or face that can be corrected by relaxing a muscle.
- Lines on sides of nose are becoming more distinct.
What are the benefits of neurotoxins?
- Injections are relatively painless and carry a low risk, with little to no downtime.
- Helps decrease fine lines and wrinkles short term and helps work as a preventative for future lines.
- Make subtle changes that give you a refreshed or well-rested look.
How are neurotoxin injections performed?
Botulinum toxin injections can be completed on the same day as the initial consultation. Once you and your injector have decided on an appropriate treatment, he or she will prepare you and the medication for the procedure. The injection site will be cleansed. The needles used are very short and thin, causing minimal pain.
Depending on your specific concerns and condition, a number of injections will be needed to achieve the desired result. Short lasting swelling, and minimal redness and bleeding will possibly occur as a result of your procedure. Once the neurotoxin has been injected, it will take several days to reach the full effect and a follow-up visit is often scheduled if desired.
After the injections you can return to your regular activities immediately; however, strenuous activity is discouraged for the remainder of the day. Redness and swelling that occur at the time of injection usually resolve quickly. Any bruising that might occur will usually resolve over a week or two.
What does neurotoxin aftercare look like?
Avoid massaging or touching the injected area afterwards; this may inadvertently cause the botulinum toxin to spread to an unintended area.
Lying down (approximately up to 4 hours post procedure) or inverting the body shortly after injection can also cause complications.
No alcohol immediately following treatment.
Botox vs Dysport: what is the difference?
Both are botulinum toxin type A, both are FDA approved, and both do the same job: relax the small muscles that crease your skin so lines soften and new ones form more slowly. The differences are in the details, and our licensed providers use both depending on the area and how you have responded in the past.
| Botox | Dysport | |
|---|---|---|
| Kicks in | 3 to 7 days, full effect at 2 weeks | Often 2 to 4 days, full effect at 2 weeks |
| Lasts | 3 to 4 months | 3 to 4 months |
| Spread | Stays very local, good for small precise areas like the lip flip or crow’s feet | Spreads slightly wider, good for larger areas like the forehead and between the brows |
| Units | Standard unit | About 2.5 to 3 Dysport units equal 1 Botox unit, so the unit count looks higher but the price per treatment is similar |
| Best for | Precision areas, people who have used it for years and like the result | Forehead and frown lines, people who want a faster onset, people who feel Botox has stopped working as well |
We also carry Xeomin, which has no added proteins and suits people who worry about building resistance, Jeuveau, and Daxxify, which can last 6 months or more for some clients. If you are not sure, the honest answer is that most people cannot tell the difference between a good Botox result and a good Dysport result. Your provider will suggest one based on your face, your budget and what has worked for you before.

Botox for men
Men make up a growing share of our neurotoxin clients in Elmhurst, and the goals are usually the same: look less tired or stern at work, not look “done”. Male facial muscles are stronger, so men typically need more units per area than women, and the aim is softening rather than erasing, so the brow stays flat and masculine. Frown lines, forehead lines and masseter treatment for jaw clenching are the most requested. Appointments take about 15 minutes and there is no visible sign you had anything done.
Botox and Dysport FAQs
What is the difference between Botox and Dysport, and which is better?
Both are botulinum toxin type A and give the same kind of result for the same length of time, 3 to 4 months. Dysport often kicks in a day or two sooner and spreads slightly wider, which suits larger areas like the forehead. Botox stays more local, which suits precise spots like a lip flip. Neither is better across the board; your provider picks by area and by how you have responded before.
How long does Botox last?
Typically 3 to 4 months. Very expressive people, heavy exercisers and first-timers sometimes see it fade closer to 3 months; regular clients often stretch toward 4. Daxxify can last 6 months or more for some people.
How long does Botox take to work?
You will notice movement softening in 3 to 7 days, with Dysport often a little sooner, and the full result at 2 weeks. That is why we schedule any touch up at the 2 week mark rather than earlier.
How many units of Botox do I need?
Frown lines usually take 15 to 25 units, forehead 10 to 20, and crow’s feet 6 to 12 per side, so a full upper face is often 40 to 60 units. A lip flip is 4 to 6 units and masseter treatment 20 to 30 per side. Men typically need more. Your provider maps the exact plan at your consult.
How much does Botox cost in Elmhurst?
Botox and Dysport start at $10 to $15 per unit depending on current specials. New clients can get 20 units of Dysport for $199 and a lip flip for $50. Glow Getter members pay $11 to $13.50 per unit. See the pricing page for the full list.
Does Botox hurt?
The needles are very short and thin, and each injection feels like a quick pinch that is over in a second. Most clients rate it a 2 out of 10 and are done in about 15 minutes. No numbing is needed.
Will Botox make me look frozen or fake?
Only if it is overdone. A frozen look comes from too many units in the wrong places. Our licensed providers dose conservatively so you can still raise your brows and look surprised, just without the deep creases. If you want a lighter touch, ask about baby Botox, which uses fewer units for a softer, more preventative effect.
How often should you get Botox?
Every 3 to 4 months keeps the result steady. Coming in before the lines fully return trains the muscles to stay relaxed, and many long-term clients find they need fewer units over time.
What should you not do after Botox?
For the first 4 hours, stay upright and do not rub, massage or press on the treated area. Skip hard workouts, saunas, hot yoga and alcohol for 24 hours, and avoid facials, massage and tight hats or headbands over the area for the rest of the day. Gentle facial expressions are fine and may help the product settle.
What is the difference between Botox and filler?
Botox relaxes the muscles that crease the skin when you move, so it treats expression lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. Filler adds volume, so it treats hollows, folds and lines that are there even at rest. If the line disappears when your face relaxes, it is a Botox line; if it is still there, it usually needs filler.
Does masseter Botox work for jaw clenching and TMJ?
Yes. Botox in the masseter muscle relaxes the clench, which eases jaw tension, headaches and tooth grinding for most clients within 2 weeks, and over a few months it also slims a square jaw. It typically takes 20 to 30 units per side and lasts 4 to 6 months.
What is a lip flip and how long does it last?
A lip flip is 4 to 6 units of Botox or Dysport along the upper lip border so the lip gently rolls outward and looks fuller without adding volume. It takes 5 minutes, lasts 6 to 8 weeks, and is a popular first step before lip filler. New clients can try one for $50.
Is Botox for men different?
Same product, different dosing. Men have stronger facial muscles, so they usually need more units per area, and the goal is to soften lines while keeping a flat, masculine brow. Frown lines, forehead lines and masseter treatment are the most common requests from our male clients in Elmhurst.
What age should you start Botox?
There is no right age. Many clients start in their late 20s or 30s with a light preventative dose once lines begin to linger at rest; others start in their 40s or 50s to soften established lines. The right time is when the lines bother you, and a complimentary consultation will tell you whether Botox, filler or skin treatment is the better fit.
What are the side effects of Botox?
A small bump or pinpoint redness at each injection site for 15 to 30 minutes, and occasionally a small bruise or a mild headache the first day. A heavy brow or drooping eyelid is rare, temporary, and almost always a placement issue, which is why dosing by a licensed provider who knows facial anatomy matters.
