What is the aftercare for chemical peels like?
Your treatment provider will discuss your personal aftercare treatment and expectations. Depending on the depth of your peel expect some redness and peeling of the skin.
After peel care includes a 3-7 day period free of makeup, exercise, and excessive heat such as hot showers, steam rooms and saunas. Wide brim hats and broad spectrum SPF over 30 should be worn everyday to protect the sensitive skin, especially during peak sunlight hours.
How do I prepare for a chemical peel treatment?
Chemicals peels should not be performed on anyone who has recently waxed within 7 days of the area being treated, has been in or plans to be in the sun, has an active cold sore ( take Valtrex 48hours prior), used Accutane within the past year, has had recent radiation or chemotherapy, as well as women pregnant or breastfeeding.
Discontinue using any prescription topicals as well as products containing retinol, alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), beta hydroxy acids (BHA) or benzoyl peroxide 7 days prior to your peel.

The VI Peel timeline, day by day
| Timeline | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Treatment day | About 30 minutes. A warm tingle for a minute or two, then numb. You leave with the peel on and wash it off at home 4 to 6 hours later. |
| Days 1 to 2 | Skin looks slightly tan or tight, like a mild sunburn. Makeup is fine after the first wash. Apply the post-peel towelettes and moisturizer we send home. |
| Days 3 to 4 | Peeling starts around the mouth and chin and spreads outward. This is the part people take photos of. Do not pick or pull. |
| Days 5 to 6 | Peeling finishes. Heavy moisturizer and SPF, nothing else. |
| Day 7 | Fresh, bright, even skin. Dark spots look lighter and pores smaller. |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Pigment keeps fading and collagen keeps building. Book the next peel at 4 to 6 weeks if you are doing a series. |
Chemical peel FAQs
How long do you peel after a chemical peel?
With a VI Peel, visible peeling usually starts on day 3, is heaviest on days 3 to 5, and is finished by day 6 or 7. Light peels flake for 2 to 3 days. PRX-T33 does not cause visible peeling at all.
How much does a chemical peel cost in Elmhurst?
Chemical peels at Accelerated Aesthetics start at $299, including the VI Peel and PRX-T33. New clients get 20 percent off a first treatment, series pricing lowers the per peel cost, and Glow Getter members save 10 to 20 percent.
How much does a VI Peel cost?
A VI Peel starts at $299 and includes the take-home post-peel kit. Most clients doing a series for pigment or acne book 3 to 4 peels 4 to 6 weeks apart.
What is PRX-T33 and is there downtime?
PRX-T33 is a no-needle, no-peel peel. It uses TCA and hydrogen peroxide massaged into the skin to stimulate collagen and tighten without damaging the surface, so there is no flaking and no downtime. It is the peel we recommend before an event or for anyone who cannot take a week of peeling.
Chemical peel vs microneedling, which is better for acne scars and dark spots?
Peels are better for flat dark spots, melasma, acne marks and uneven tone because they lift pigment from the surface. Microneedling is better for indented scars and texture because it rebuilds collagen underneath. For both concerns we usually alternate them a few weeks apart.
IPL vs chemical peel for sun damage and dark spots?
IPL uses light to target individual brown spots and redness and is great for scattered sun spots on lighter skin. A peel treats the whole surface, works on melasma, and is safe for deeper skin tones where IPL is not. Your provider will often recommend a peel first and IPL for what remains.
Does a chemical peel hurt?
You feel a warm tingle or sting for a minute or two as each layer goes on, then the skin numbs. Most clients rate it a 2 or 3 out of 10. A fan and the numbing agents built into the VI Peel keep it comfortable.
What should you not do after a chemical peel?
Do not pick or pull peeling skin, do not exfoliate, and skip retinoids, acids and benzoyl peroxide for 7 days. Avoid sweating, saunas, hot showers on the face and direct sun for the first week, and wear SPF 30 or higher every day. Wait 2 weeks before waxing, Botox or microneedling on the area.
Is a chemical peel safe for dark skin?
Yes, with the right peel. The VI Peel family includes a formula designed for melasma and pigment on deeper skin tones, and PRX-T33 is safe for all skin types. Our licensed providers prep the skin and choose the depth to avoid post-inflammatory pigment.
How often should you get a chemical peel?
For pigment or acne, a series of 3 to 4 VI Peels spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, then one every 3 to 4 months to maintain. PRX-T33 is done as a series of 4 weekly treatments, then monthly. A single peel before an event works fine for a glow.
When is the best time of year for a peel?
Fall through early spring. Skin is at its lightest, there is less sun to avoid, and a series started in October is finished by the holidays. Summer peels are possible with strict sun avoidance, but PRX-T33 is the easier summer choice.
