The Holiday Skin Countdown: What to Book Now to Glow in December

Quick answer: Work backward from your first December event. Book a chemical peel or microneedling series starting in late September or early October, since a proper series runs three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Schedule your final resurfacing session at least four weeks out, your last neurotoxin appointment three to four weeks out, and any filler four to six weeks out. In the final two weeks, do nothing new. Starting in October rather than December is the entire difference between results and damage control. At Accelerated Aesthetics, a medical spa in Elmhurst, IL serving greater Chicagoland, we build these timelines backward from your date.

Every December, someone calls the week of a party asking what we can do by Saturday.

The honest answer is: hydrate you and make you glow for an evening. That is a real and lovely thing, and it is also not what they were hoping for. What they wanted was the result of a plan they did not start.

Late September is when that plan starts. Here is the calendar.

Why does the timing matter so much?

Because almost every effective treatment has a period where you look worse before you look better.

Peels flake. Microneedling leaves you pink and can trigger a brief purge. Injectables swell and occasionally bruise. All of that is normal, temporary, and completely fine unless it lands three days before a party.

There is a second reason that matters more. The treatments that produce real change work in series, not single sessions, because pigment sits at varying depths and collagen remodels over months. A microneedling series finished in October is still improving in December. One session booked in December is just a session.

Fall is also simply the correct season for this work. Resurfacing leaves skin photosensitive, so lower UV makes it safer and the aftercare easier to follow. Our post on repairing summer sun damage covers why September opens the correction window.

Ten to twelve weeks out: start the series

Counting back from early December, that is right now.

  • Book a consultation first. Not a treatment. You want a plan with dates mapped against your actual calendar, including the party you have not been invited to yet but will be.
  • Begin your peel or microneedling series. A chemical peel series for pigment and dullness, or microneedling with exosomes or PRP for texture and collagen. Sessions space four to six weeks apart, so three sessions is a twelve-week commitment.
  • Start or restart a retinoid. Now, not in November. The adjustment period takes weeks and you do not want to be peeling in the same month you are being photographed.
  • Try anything new here. If you have never had a treatment before, this is the window to find out how your skin responds while there is still room to adjust.

Six to four weeks out: finish and adjust

Nothing new from here. Only repeats of things you have already tolerated well.

  • Four to six weeks before: final filler appointment if it is part of your plan. Swelling settles in about two weeks, and this leaves margin to adjust or dissolve if the result is not right.
  • Four weeks before: last peel or microneedling session. Redness, flaking, and any purge clear comfortably in that window, and collagen keeps building after.
  • Three to four weeks before: final neurotoxin appointment. Full effect develops at 10 to 14 days, so this lands you at peak result with time for a small touch-up.

If you are booking around a specific date rather than the season generally, the same logic applies more strictly. Our wedding skin timeline works through the tighter version of this schedule.

The final two weeks: change nothing

This is the rule people break, usually in a panic.

  • No new products. Not the gift set, not the sample, not the thing your sister swears by. Reactions do not care about your calendar.
  • No new treatments. Including facials somewhere unfamiliar while traveling.
  • Yes to hydration. A gentle, non-exfoliating treatment like our AquaJet Facial is safe five to seven days out and leaves skin plump and camera-ready without any risk.
  • Dermaplaning three to five days before if it is already part of your routine. Makeup sits noticeably better.
  • Ease off salt and alcohol in the last few days. Unromantic advice, visible in photographs.

What if December is already close?

You still have options, they are just narrower. Focus on glow rather than correction: a hydrating facial, a repeat of any treatment you have had before at the four-week mark, and consistent home care in between.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum, $89. Shop it here.

Our Hyaluronic Acid Serum ($89) is the fastest visible change you can make in a week, because most of what reads as “tired” in December photos is dehydration rather than aging. Skip anything you have never used before.

Frequently asked questions about holiday skin timing

When should I start skin treatments for the holidays?
Late September through mid-October for anything involving a series. Peels and microneedling space four to six weeks apart and typically need three or more sessions, so a full course runs ten to twelve weeks before results settle.

How far in advance should I get Botox before an event?
Three to four weeks. Full effect develops at 10 to 14 days, and this timing leaves room for a touch-up while ensuring any minor bruising has resolved.

How far in advance should I get filler before an event?
Four to six weeks minimum. Swelling settles within about two weeks, and the extra margin allows time to adjust or dissolve if needed.

When should I stop getting peels before a party?
Four weeks before is a safe final session. Peels cause temporary flaking and the skin looks its best a few weeks after rather than a few days after.

Can I get a facial the week of an event?
Yes, if it is hydrating rather than exfoliating and it is something you have had before. Five to seven days out is the ideal window.

Why is fall the best time for skin treatments?
Resurfacing treatments leave skin temporarily photosensitive, so lower UV exposure reduces the risk of rebound pigment. Fall also gives collagen-stimulating treatments the months they need to show results.

How many sessions do I need to see a difference?
Most people see meaningful change after three sessions of a peel or microneedling series, though the first session often produces a visible glow that fades. The durable change comes from the series.

What does a treatment plan cost in the Chicago area?
Chemical peels at Accelerated Aesthetics start at $299 and our AquaJet Facial starts at $250, with a $75 express AquaJet for new clients. Because results come from a series, we map the full plan and pricing at your consultation so nothing is a surprise in November.
