Botox vs Dysport: Which One Is Right for You?

Quick answer: Botox and Dysport are both FDA-approved neurotoxins that relax the muscles behind frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. Dysport tends to kick in a day or two sooner and spreads a little more, which suits larger areas like the forehead. Botox is more concentrated and precise, which suits small, targeted areas. Both last about 3 to 4 months and cost about the same per treatment. At Accelerated Aesthetics in Elmhurst, our licensed providers offer both and recommend one based on your face, not a preference for either brand. We serve Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Lombard, Villa Park and greater Chicagoland.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Both are made from the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, and both work the same way: they block the signal that tells a muscle to contract, so the skin above it stops creasing. The differences are in the formula.

Which works faster, Botox or Dysport?

Dysport, by a small margin. Many clients notice softening within 2 to 3 days, versus 3 to 5 for Botox. Both reach their full effect around the two-week mark, which is why we book follow-ups and touch-ups at two weeks and why you should plan treatment at least two weeks before a wedding, reunion or holiday photos.

Which lasts longer?

They are close to even. A 2024 review in the journal Aesthetic Surgery found no consistent difference in duration between the two products when dosed equivalently. What matters more than the brand is the dose, your metabolism, how expressive you are, and whether you keep a regular schedule. Clients who treat every 3 to 4 months tend to see their results last longer over time because the muscles stay relaxed.

Is Dysport cheaper than Botox?

Per unit, yes, but a Dysport unit is smaller, so it takes about 2.5 to 3 Dysport units to do the work of one Botox unit. At Accelerated Aesthetics we price them to come out about the same for the same result, so you can choose based on what suits your face. Both are $15 per Botox-equivalent unit at standard pricing, and new patients can start with 20 units at a special price. Glow Getter members pay $11 to $13.50 per unit. See our pricing page.

How many units do I need?

  • Frown lines (the 11s): 20 units of Botox
  • Forehead lines: 10 to 20 units
  • Crow’s feet: 12 to 24 units (both sides)
  • Lip flip: 4 to 6 units
  • Masseter (jaw slimming, clenching): 25 to 50 units per side

These are typical ranges. Your provider will map your muscle movement and recommend a dose at your complimentary consult.

How we choose at Accelerated Aesthetics

If you have never had a neurotoxin, we usually start with whichever product suits the area you care about most. Strong forehead lines or a wide frown area lean Dysport. Crow’s feet, a lip flip or a subtle brow lift lean Botox. Clients who felt Botox faded fast often do well switching to Dysport, and vice versa. There is no wrong answer, and you can switch at any visit.

What not to do after Botox or Dysport

  • Stay upright for 4 hours; no napping or bending over for long stretches
  • Skip workouts, saunas and hot yoga for 24 hours
  • Do not rub or massage the treated area for 24 hours
  • Hold off on facials and microneedling for two weeks
  • Be patient. Judge your result at two weeks, not two days

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch from Botox to Dysport?

Yes. Many clients switch between them. Just wait until your current result has worn off, usually 3 to 4 months, so your provider can assess your natural movement and dose correctly.

Will Botox or Dysport make me look frozen?

Not when it is dosed and placed well. A frozen look comes from over-treating. Our licensed providers aim for softened lines with natural movement, and we can always add a few units at your two-week follow-up if you want more.

How often should I get Botox or Dysport?

Every 3 to 4 months for most people. Keeping a steady schedule prevents lines from re-etching and often lets you use fewer units over time.

Does Botox or Dysport hurt?

The needles are tiny and most clients describe a quick pinch. The whole appointment takes about 15 minutes and there is no downtime.
